Removalists Port Adelaide: moves around the Port, Semaphore and West Lakes

Port Adelaide is the oldest working part of the city, and its homes show it. Stone cottages and terraces line the streets around the Port River, with narrow frontages and little room for a truck. A few minutes away, Semaphore has its foreshore and older homes off Semaphore Road, and West Lakes has newer homes around the lake. Moveall moves households into, out of and between all three. Moving Company Adelaide is a service of Moveall Australia Pty Ltd, a South Australian owned and operated removalist.

Moving in the old Port

The heritage streets around Lipson Street, St Vincent Street and Commercial Road, and the residential pockets around them, hold many of Adelaide’s oldest cottages. They are some of the slowest homes in the city to move out of, for the same reasons they are loved: narrow streets, frontages set right on the footpath, small rooms with low doorways, and often no driveway at all. Some homes open straight onto the street, which shortens the carry but means the truck has to stand in the road.

  • Measure doorways and hallways for the big pieces at both homes. Old cottages can have narrow front doors and tight turns.
  • Tell us about steps at the front door and any changes in floor level inside.
  • Look at the street. If it is narrow or parked out, tell us, and ask neighbours about the truck standing across their frontage.
  • Check for rear access. A lane or side gate can make loading much easier.

Semaphore and the coast

Semaphore’s older homes sit in the streets off Semaphore Road, with the foreshore and the jetty at the end of it. Close to the beach, parking can be tight on a fine day, so moving early is easier. Further along the coast, Largs Bay and the other beachside streets are quieter, but wind off the gulf can catch mattresses, mirrors and anything large on the walk to the truck. Furniture is wrapped before it leaves the room, and Moveall runs enclosed pantechs, so once the load is on board it is out of the wind and salt air.

West Lakes

West Lakes is newer than the Port and laid out differently: homes around the lake and along quiet loops and courts, many with driveways and garages, plus townhouses and units. Driveways make for a shorter carry, but courts and loops can be tight for a large truck to turn. Tell us about the street and whether there is room for the truck at the kerb or in the driveway.

Moving between the Port and the city

Port Road runs straight from Port Adelaide to the city, and it is the way most moves between the Port and the inner suburbs go. Moves down the coast to Henley Beach and Glenelg go by the coast roads, and moves north towards Salisbury by Port Wakefield Road or the main roads across. Whatever the route, the plan starts the same way: our customer care team asks about bedrooms and living areas, access at both homes and heavy or bulky items, then we put the quote in writing. Under Moveall’s terms a fixed-price quote relies on the inventory list from the quote, so list everything.

Care for older homes and older furniture

Old homes often hold old furniture: a cedar chest, a heavy sideboard, a piano that came with the house. Moveall works to what it calls strict handling and packaging procedures, with furniture wrapped and blanketed before it moves and doorways and floors protected while the crew carries, which matters in a home with original timber floors and plaster walls. For a piano, see pianos and heavy items; for how each kind of furniture is protected, see the page for professional movers Adelaide homes need for good furniture.

For street access across the rest of Adelaide, see local movers Adelaide. Glenelg and the bayside have their own page: removalists in Glenelg. Every suburb on our list is on areas we service.
