Removalists across 28 Adelaide suburbs

Local movers Adelaide: moves across the suburbs and the Hills

A local move is still a whole household on a truck. It is shorter on the road than an interstate move, but the hard parts are the same: the carry from the door to the truck, the parking, the stairs, the lift and the driveway. This page is about local moves inside Adelaide and up to the Hills with Moveall: where we move, and how the streets of each part of the city change the way a move is planned. Moving Company Adelaide is a service of Moveall Australia Pty Ltd, whose office is in Wayville, just south of the city.

Our list runs to Adelaide City and 27 suburbs, grouped the way Moveall groups them: the city, the northern, eastern, southern and western suburbs, and the Adelaide Hills. A move between any two of them is a local move.

City apartments and the CBD

Moving into or out of an apartment in the city is mostly about time windows. Most buildings ask residents to book the goods lift and the loading dock, and many set the hours a removal can use them. Tell us the building’s rules when you ask for a quote, and book the lift for both ends of the day if you are moving between two apartments.

Some city streets have rules of their own. The City of Adelaide does not allow vehicle access in Rundle Mall from 9am to 6pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 9:15pm on Friday and 9am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday, and permit holders may only enter outside those hours. A shipping container or skip bin placed on a council road or footpath needs a City Works permit, and neighbours must be told at least 24 hours before works that occupy the street in front of another property. For a removal truck, we check parking and loading rules with the building and the council before moving day.

Inner suburbs: narrow streets and character homes

Prospect, Walkerville, Norwood, Payneham, Unley and Goodwood hold many of Adelaide’s older villas and cottages. They are lovely homes to move into and slow ones to move out of: narrow side paths, tight hallways, steps up to a front verandah and no driveway to park a truck on. Streets are often parked on both sides, so the truck may have to stand some distance from the door.

  • Measure the hallway and the doorways at the new home for big pieces such as a lounge suite, a wardrobe or a sideboard.
  • Clear the side path and take down anything in the way, such as pot plants and hoses.
  • If a neighbour will let the truck use their frontage, ask them a few days before.
  • Tell us about steps at the front door and any tight turns inside.

North and south: estates, cul-de-sacs and townhouses

Further out, in Golden Grove, Modbury, Tea Tree Gully, Paradise, Salisbury, Elizabeth and Marion, many homes are on wider blocks with a driveway, which makes for a shorter carry. The catch is the street. Cul-de-sacs and narrow estate roads can be hard to turn a large truck in, and cars on the kerb make it harder. Mawson Lakes adds townhouses and apartments, with stairs and shared driveways. In the south, Blackwood and parts of Mitcham sit in the foothills, where steep streets and sloping driveways change where the truck can stand.

The beaches and the Port

Glenelg, Brighton, Henley Beach and Semaphore are busy near the foreshore, and parking close to the beach can be tight on a fine day. Apartments along the coast bring lifts and dock bookings. Port Adelaide’s older streets have stone cottages and narrow frontages, and West Lakes has homes around the lake and along quiet loops. Our pages for removalists in Glenelg and removalists in Port Adelaide cover those areas in more detail.

The Adelaide Hills

A move up to Mount Barker means the South Eastern Freeway and its long climb out of the city, then roads and driveways that are nothing like the flat suburbs. Steep, long and gravel driveways can stop a large truck short of the house, so we plan the carry, and sometimes the truck size, around the access. Tell us at the quote how steep and how long the driveway is, whether it is sealed, and whether there is room to turn at the top. The detail is on our removalists in Mount Barker page, written for Hills moves.

Plan your local move

Tell us the two suburbs and anything about the access at either end: stairs, lifts, a steep driveway or no parking.

Your details go only to Moveall Australia Pty Ltd, who reply by phone or email.

Parking and the truck: sorting it out before the day

The closer the truck stands to the door, the shorter the day. Moveall runs 3, 5 and 8 tonne pantechs, and the truck for your move is chosen from the inventory and the access. Here is what to sort out at both homes.

  1. Clear the driveway. Move your cars off it the night before, and ask visitors not to park across it.
  2. Look at the kerb. If the street is narrow or parked out, tell us. Ask neighbours if the truck can stand across their frontage for part of the day.
  3. Check overhead. Low trees, carports and verandahs can stop a tall truck getting close. Tell us about them.
  4. Book lifts and docks. For apartments and units, book the goods lift and the dock for the times your building allows, at both ends.
  5. Gate codes and keys. Have them ready for the crew, including any for shared driveways or car parks.

A local move still needs a full plan

It is tempting to treat a move across the suburb as a few trips in the car. For a whole household it rarely works that way. The furniture still has to be wrapped and loaded properly, the boxes still have to be packed and labelled, and the house still has to be emptied by the time the new owners arrive. Our customer care team still asks about bedrooms and living areas, access at both homes and heavy or bulky items, and we still put the quote in writing. Under Moveall’s terms a fixed-price quote relies on the inventory list from the quote, so a complete list matters as much for a short move as a long one.

If you would rather not pack, Moveall’s Wrap & Pack service supplies all the boxes and packing materials and packs the house before the truck arrives: see packing services. For the whole sequence of a house move, see the page for removalists Adelaide families book for complete moves.

Questions people ask

How long does a local move take?

It depends on the volume of furniture and boxes, the access at both homes and the drive between them. A small unit with easy parking is much quicker than a large home with stairs at one end and a steep driveway at the other. Ask us for an estimate when we quote.

Do I need a permit to park a removal truck in the city?

It depends on the street and the building. The City of Adelaide requires a City Works permit for skip bins and shipping containers placed on council roads or footpaths. For a removal truck, we check parking and loading rules with the building and the council before moving day.

Do you move between two apartments?

Yes. Book the goods lift and the loading dock at both buildings for the times they allow, and tell us the times when we quote.

Do you move to Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills?

Yes. Mount Barker is on our list, and the Adelaide Hills are on Moveall’s list of areas. See removalists in Mount Barker.

What if the truck cannot get up my driveway?

Tell us at the quote. We plan the carry around the access, and the truck for the move is chosen with the access in mind.
