Pianos, pool tables and heavy pieces in your Adelaide move

Most households have one or two pieces that change the shape of a move: the upright piano in the lounge, the pool table in the rumpus room, the solid timber dining setting that took four people to bring in. They cannot be carried like the rest of the furniture, and the stairs, doorways and driveways between them and the truck matter more than for anything else in the house. Moveall’s heavy and bulky items service, which Moveall calls Supercharge, adds extra team members and specialty equipment to your move for exactly these pieces. Moving Company Adelaide is a service of Moveall Australia Pty Ltd, an Adelaide removalist.

Heavy items, as part of the whole move

We move pianos and pool tables inside a complete household move, on the same truck and as part of the same move as the rest of the home. We do not run them as separate single-piece jobs. That suits the pieces as much as it suits us: the crew plans the whole load around them, the truck is set up for them, and they travel tied off and protected alongside the furniture they share a house with.

  • Extra team members, so heavy pieces are never lifted by too few people.
  • Specialty equipment for moving heavy items safely through the house and onto the truck.
  • Planning at the quote, so the right people and equipment come on the day.
  • Loading in the right place: heavy pieces sit low and against the truck walls, with the rest of the load built around them.

Moving a piano in an Adelaide house move

A piano is heavy, top-heavy and easy to damage. The case and the finish mark easily, the legs and pedals are vulnerable, and the mechanism inside does not like being dropped or tipped. Moving one safely is about people, equipment and route: enough hands to control it, the right gear to carry and wheel it, and a planned path from the room to the truck that avoids tight turns and soft ground.

Tell us at the quote what kind of piano it is, roughly how old, which room it is in and how it gets out: steps at the front door, a narrow hallway, stairs to an upper floor or a steep path from the driveway. Do the same for the room it is going to at the new home. It is common for a piano to need tuning after a move, as it settles into a new room; ask your piano tuner when to book it.

Moving a pool table

A full-size pool table is one of the heaviest things in a home, much of it in the slate bed, and it is rarely moved in one piece. Tell us at the quote the size of the table, whether the bed is slate, which room it is in and the way out, and we will confirm how your table will be handled as part of the move. At the new home, think about where it will stand before moving day, with room for a cue at every side and a floor that is level.

Plan a move with heavy items

Tell us where from and where to, and list the heavy pieces in the box below: the piano, the pool table and anything else that took several people to bring in.

Other heavy and bulky pieces

Pianos and pool tables are the pieces people think of first, but they are not the only ones that change a move. Solid timber and marble dining settings, large sideboards and dressers, big outdoor settings, gym equipment and oversized lounge suites can all need more hands than the rest of the house. Tell us about every piece like this at the quote, with its rough size and where it is. Our customer care team asks about heavy or bulky items for exactly this reason: they decide the size of the crew and the equipment that comes on the day.

The route from the room to the truck

For a heavy piece, the route matters more than the distance. A level path through a wide hallway and out a front door to a driveway is straightforward. Each of these adds planning, and is worth telling us about:

  • Steps at the front or back door, or up to a verandah, common in Adelaide’s older villas and cottages.
  • Stairs to an upper floor or down to a rumpus room, especially with a turn.
  • Narrow hallways and doorways, where a piece has to be turned on its side or end.
  • Lifts in apartment buildings, which may be too small or rated too low for the piece.
  • Steep, long or gravel driveways in the Hills, where the truck may not reach the door.
  • Soft ground such as lawn or garden beds between the door and the truck.

Measure the doorways and hallways at the new home for the biggest pieces before moving day, and decide where each will stand. It is much easier to place a piano once than to move it twice. Getting heavy pieces ready

  1. Empty them. Under Moveall’s terms furniture must be emptied of loose items. Clear the piano stool, the drawers of the sideboard and the pockets of the pool table.
  2. Clear the route. Move rugs, side tables, pot plants and anything else between the piece and the door.
  3. Keep people clear. Children, pets and other trades should be well away from the route while heavy pieces move, as Moveall’s terms ask for every move.
  4. Tell us about the floor at the new home, especially if it is new timber or polished concrete.
  5. Plan the new spot. Know where each heavy piece will stand before the truck arrives.

Care and cover

Heavy pieces get the same strict handling and packaging procedures as the rest of the house: wrapped and blanketed before they move, floors and doorways protected, and tied off in the truck. Moveall holds $20 million public liability cover. Ask us about transit insurance for your belongings, especially if your piano or table is valuable. Our article on removalist insurance explains the difference between the kinds of cover.

How the rest of the furniture is protected is on our page for the professional movers Adelaide homes need for good furniture, and the whole sequence of a house move, from the quote to the first night, is on the page for removalists Adelaide families book for complete moves.

Moving heavy pieces into an apartment or upstairs

Apartments and two-storey homes need the most planning for heavy pieces. A goods lift has a size and a weight rating, and a large piece may not fit standing up, or at all. Stairs with a landing and a turn can be harder than a long straight flight. Before the quote, check the lift’s internal size and weight rating with your building manager, measure the stair width and any turns, and tell us both. If a piece cannot go by the lift or the stairs, it is far better to know before moving day than at the door.

The same goes for the room at the other end. A piano needs a wall away from heaters, air conditioning outlets and direct sun, and a pool table needs space around it and a level floor. Decide where each will go before the day, so the crew can place it once and leave it there.

Questions people ask

Do you move pianos on their own?

No. We move pianos and pool tables as part of a complete household move, on the same truck as the rest of the home.

Does a piano cost extra to move?

Heavy and bulky items need extra team members and specialty equipment, and the quote reflects that. Tell us about the piano at the quote so it is included in writing.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?

Often, yes. Pianos tend to settle in a new room. Ask your piano tuner how long to wait before tuning.

Can a piano go in an apartment lift?

Sometimes. Check the lift’s size and weight rating with your building manager, and tell us both when we quote.

What other heavy items should I mention?

Anything that took several people to bring in: solid timber or marble tables, large sideboards and dressers, gym equipment, big outdoor settings and oversized lounges.

Do you move heavy items to the Adelaide Hills?

Yes, as part of a complete move. Tell us about the driveway and the path to the door, because steep and gravel access matters most for heavy pieces. See removalists in Mount Barker.
